What About Middle School?

A focused approach to the middle school years

Foundations for lifelong learning

Our middle school program (grades 6-8) is designed to cultivate curiosity, independence, and confidence in young learners.

Small classes spark big learning potential

Hands-on experiences transform academic understanding

It’s a year built on discovery—academically, socially, and personally. With two dedicated faculty advisors guiding them, students dive into hands-on courses that spark curiosity: experimenting with chemistry and ecology in the lab and outdoors, solving creative challenges in math and science, exploring Vermont’s history and culture through place-based social studies, and building a love of reading, writing, and storytelling. They also begin world language, music, and art, developing both skills and self-expression.

At the same time, 6th graders learn how to navigate the whole school, connect with older mentors, and find role models in our tight-knit community. The program balances structure with independence, giving students the support they need while fostering the confidence that comes with middle school growth. It’s a foundational year that sets the stage for thriving at VCS and beyond

Sixth grade is where the Vermont Commons journey begins.

Nurturing emotional intelligence

Middle school demands more than academic skills. We create a supportive environment where students learn self-awareness and community connection.

We dedicate time each week to helping middle schoolers find ways to navigate challenges, interact positively with their peers, and take care of themselves and their community.

  • Empowering personal growth through meaningful connections

  • Building resilience in a supportive community

  • Navigating challenges with compassion and understanding

VCS practices Social-Emotional Learning to help our students learn and grow together. When everyone uses the same language and ideas, it facilitates students and adults to talk about feelings, relationships, and choices and sets a foundation for life.

Building academic independence

During these years, students develop skills to be successful learners for life. We coach them on things like using a planner, advocating for themselves, and managing assignments.

Attaining social flexibility through structure

Middle school brings social complexity. We teach students to navigate disagreements, repair relationships, and build a stronger community through restorative practices that honor everyone involved.

Conflict resolution & restorative justice

We gather to heal harm and strengthen our bonds together.

Managing social discord among peers

Students learn to listen, understand, and find common ground.
