Engaging with the World
At Vermont Commons School our students engage with the world both through classroom instruction and a curriculum that is grounded in local and global outreach and involvement. Community Engagement is one of the four pillars of our Strategic Plan, and our commitment to participation in the world is part of what makes Vermont Commons School the extraordinary place it is.
A Vermont Commons School education immerses students in culture, ecology, landscapes, and experiences in which to study science, social studies, English, mathematics and world languages. We believe that a school founded on Community Engagement 1) fosters students’ connection to place 2) nurtures students’ love of learning 3) creates vibrant partnerships between our school and the greater community 4) improves environmental, social and economic vitality, and 5) helps students learn to care for their world and feel empowered to make a difference.
Our definition of community is bigger than simply “local.” Students learn to see the entire globe as their neighborhood. Vermont Commons School offers two or three overseas travel/study opportunities to students each year, and we also maintain active international programs with sister schools in China and Peru.
