How to Apply
Vermont Commons is an independent college preparatory day school for academically motivated students in grades 7-12 with an average class size of 12 students. Enrollment at Vermont Commons School is growing at a planned and steady pace. When the school was founded in 1997, there were 32 students in attendance; now, in the 2009-10 academic year, about 90 students are attending the school. Enrollment of new students increased by 45% in 2006-07 over the previous year. We admit students on a rolling and ongoing basis, and applicants are encouraged to apply early. We do, on a space available basis, admit students after the school begins on a case-by-case basis. Families are encouraged to call the Admissions Director for further information. Otherwise, once enrollment reaches our overall goal in each grade, students will be placed on a waiting list. We admit students to the 7th through the 11th grades. We do not consider applicants for the 12th grade or a post graduate year.
We are appreciative of your interest in Vermont Commons, and each year we are gratified by the number of motivated, remarkable and engaging students who submit applications to our school. In reviewing an application, we seek students with academic promise who will benefit from our challenging academic program. To that end, the admissions process is designed to provide the information we need to be confident that Vermont Commons School can meet the educational needs and goals of each candidate. Each applicant is required to have a student interview and a shadow day at the school. A shadow day includes visiting school with a current student host who will take the prospective student to classes for the day. For students who are interested in applying after the school year concludes, we encourage your interest, but a shadow day will not be not possible and we will arrange for the student to meet with a member of the faculty. Additionally, we will make every effort for the prospective family to meet with a current student to enable additional insights to the VCS experience.
Each applicant must provide the following:
- Application packet: This includes a student application form and two letters of recommendation. They can be from any combination of the three following people: the student's Guidance Counselor, a Language Arts teacher or a Mathematics teacher.
- Official School Transcript
- Recent Standardized Test Scores
- $50 Non-refundable Application Fee
- Optional current photograph
We encourage you to submit additional information that you feel would help us with the admissions process. Please call Sarah Soule, the Director of Admissions, at 802-865-8084 if you have questions or need assistance.
