South Burlington History Project (2006-2008)
VCS has entered into a two-year collaborative partnership with the South Burlington Land Trust under the auspices of the Vermont Historical Society’s Community History Partnership program. The overall goal of the program is to raise public awareness of local history. Our partnership with the Land Trust is focused toward rediscovering the hidden and forgotten past of South Burlington and using this history to create a an on-line resource documenting where the South Burlington of today has come from.
Most people today would be surprised to think of South Burlington as a farm community, but it was up until the 1970s. This past lives in the memories of older residents, and one major goal of this project is to preserve these memories and images. The primary end goal of the semester is to complete a short documentary video that integrates interview footage shot by last year’s classes and new material we will continue to gather.
There are three main components of the class:
- Through historical and archival research, we have located old images of South Burlington, records of historic sites that are no longer present, and also information about historic sites that still remain but may not be known by the general public.
- Through videography and oral history interviews with elderly residents, we have captured memories of the South Burlington that once was. Students will share this information with the public by creating a website (described below) and a full-length documentary investigating the past, present & future of South Burlington.
- Through the construction of a public website, we plan to make available to the larger public the materials yielded by our research. The website is designed to present an interactive map of the South Burlington landscape. Old photographs, historical documents and video clips from our interviews will be available from the map with the click of a mouse.
The hope is that this resource will aid in the process of city government, civic organizations like the Land Trust, and the public in general to help make informed decisions about where South Burlington is going in the future. This is a service that will ideally contribute to the public discussion over development and conservation for years to come.
