Physical Education
The goal of the physical fitness program at Vermont Commons School is to provide students with the opportunity to develop a strong level of fitness as well as a commitment to nutrition, safety, physical activity, and personal health. Good physical health fosters a higher self-esteem and a better understanding of the human body.
Vermont Commons School offers a variety of classes each semester to meet these objectives. This may include running, tennis, yoga, walking, Latin dance, volleyball, and basketball. The classes are taught and supervised by Vermont Commons staff or outside instructors with specific expertise. Whenever possible, we encourage and support using our available resources such as the South Burlington Bike Path, Szymanski and Farrell Street Parks, and Shelburne Farms. We also partner with the Sports and Fitness Edge to accommodate volleyball and basketball.
We also encourage students to continue participating in rigorous physical activity outside of school. Many VCS students play in local ice hockey and football leagues with peers from other schools. Others train and compete in swimming, ice-skating, sailing, and equestrian events. We recognize that these activities also meet the objectives of promoting healthy behaviors and enhance the well being of our students.
Vermont Commons School will host the Fourth Annual Mixed Quads Volleyball Tournament at the Field House (Shelburne Athletic Club) on Saturday, March 29th. Please see Flying Turtles Volleyball poster for further information.
