About Us

In 1997 Bob Skiff made a dream a reality as Vermont Commons opened its doors to 32 students. Today the school remains true to the Mission Statement and Guiding Principles as our student body approaches 100 students. The spirit of community, academic rigor, support, collaboration and placed-based education permeates the school—a school that extends beyond the classroom to the fields, waters and mountains of New England and beyond.

At Vermont Commons School, the faculty recognizes students as individuals with incredible potential. Students are encouraged to share their opinions with faculty as they engage in an intellectual exchange. The standards and expectations at Commons are clear, allowing students to challenge themselves to excel in their studies, to acquire their voices, and to attain their personal goals. Students are provided the opportunity to develop their leadership skills by participating in Encounter Weeks, Research and Service, extracurricular activities and programs, and in the classroom by leading discussions and activities.

Each day, we gather as community to share stories and remind ourselves why community is valued. Our community is a community of learners where students learn with faculty, and faculty learn with students.

As we begin our second decade, we are excited by the opportunities to expand the ripples of our ever-widening circles while holding true to the values and ethics on which we are founded. We are an educational community that is innovative and visionary, where students are challenged to dream of what can be rather than what is.

We invite you to visit Vermont Commons and experience a community committed to vision, hope and stewardship.
